We are a group of Box Hill community members who wish to preserve the essential character of our neighbourhood, while acknowledging that with increasing population some reductions are needed to personal living spaces.
We expect our government to approach the higher density developments with due respect for what is there, with consideration for maintaining our quality of life, including involving Whitehorse Council more fully regarding proposed changes, and addressing EPA Reports publicly and fully regarding the condition of the site to be built over. Such a process has not been included as part of the Planning minister’s approval to change the site’s status to residential. A properly conceived and constructed Concept Plan to set and oversee standards for proposed construction has to date not been created, nor have any plans to require such a Plan been announced.
Contributions from residents were invited but ‘terms of reference’ (what objections would be considered) were very restricted.
More could have been expected when it came to deciding what to do with the Box Hill Brickworks site.
With open space being at a premium, particularly considering the government’s plan to double Box Hill’s population by approximately 2041, (approx. 15 short years), to be built on sites not including the Brickworks land as part of that expansion, turning that land into a park provides a sensible balance of open space against that increasing population density.
Once it’s gone, it’s never coming back.
We encourage more forward-looking vision from our government so our children will be glad of the decisions we have made for them, not deride us.
